Polyps of the Larynx

Polyps of the Larynx

Laryngeal polyps are lesions of the surface of the vocal cords and usually appear as a focal swelling with a broad base or stalk on one of the two cords. They are benign lesions most commonly found in men and the prevailing perception is that they are due to misuse of the voice leading to vocal trauma. Microbleeding and swelling occurs at the site of the injury which can leave permanent swelling of the vocal cord. Disruption of the anatomy of the cords affects the way they oscillate during phonation, which is why the most common symptom is gagging and fatigue in speech. Diagnosis is made quickly and painlessly by laryngeal endoscopy. The vocal cords are examined under magnification both in terms of their anatomy and their functionality.

How are Laryngeal Polyps treated?

Therapeutically, small lesions can be improved with speech therapy. The basic treatment of polyps is surgical removal by microlaryngoscopy.
