The tongue halter (ankyloglossia) is a small piece of tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. When this tissue is short, it can create problems with breastfeeding. A similar issue can occur with the frenulum of the upper lip, which can prevent the upper lip from folding correctly, a necessary action for proper breastfeeding.

A short tongue halter can also cause problems in young children, especially with speech, as it affects their ability to produce certain sounds that require tongue movement. Additionally, when the upper lip frenulum is short and extends low onto the gums, it can interfere with the development of the front teeth and create a gap between the two front teeth. This gap, if noticeable and bothersome, may require intervention from an orthodontist or pediatric dentist.A short tongue halter can also cause problems in young children, especially with speech, as it affects their ability to produce certain sounds that require tongue movement. Treatment and Management

Surgical correction – excision of the tongue halter. The procedure is quick and painless, with minimal bleeding and no need for stitches.

Early diagnosis and treatment of a short tongue halter are important to ensure the child's normal development and to avoid problems with speech and feeding.
