External otitis
External otitis
It is an inflammation of the skin of the external ear canal characterised by swelling, redness and discharge, often smelly. Otalgia, which intensifies with movement of the ear flap, and itching (itching) make up the classic clinical picture. If the duct is sufficiently swollen and blocked by secretions, then the level of hearing will also be affected (conductive hearing loss).
Predictive factors:
- Narrowing of the duct (congenital, exostoses, osteoma)
- Eczema
- Seborrheic dermatitis
- Allergies
- Trauma (swab, claw)
Common microbes
- Pseudomonas
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Streptococcus
Treatment
Treatment in the majority of cases involves the administration of antibiotic drops or ointment topically, as well as oral painkillers. Regular and thorough cleaning of the ear by the doctor to remove secretions is essential. The patient should avoid exposure of the ear to water for about 10 days.
