They are benign lesions most commonly found in men and the prevailing perception is that they are due to misuse of the voice leading to vocal trauma. Microbleeding and swelling occurs at the site of the injury which can leave permanent swelling of the vocal cord. Disruption of the anatomy of the cords affects the way they oscillate during phonation, which is why the most common symptom is gagging and fatigue in speech. Diagnosis is made quickly and painlessly by laryngeal endoscopy.
